FAQs for Our Guided Fly Fishing Trips

Where do you conduct guided trips?

Blue Ridge Fishing Adventures guides on nearly 30 rivers, streams, and lakes in western Virginia. Every trip location is customized for client convenience, quality of the fishing, and accessibility.

When do you conduct guided trips?

Virginia offers the ability to experience fantastic fishing year round due to the diversity of species.  Trout fishing tends to be best from October through June, but continues during the summer on several rivers.  Smallmouth fishing is best from April through late fall.

What fishing licenses do I need to have?

Virginia requires all anglers age 16 and up to have a State Freshwater Fishing License.  To fish for trout between October 1 and June 15, a Trout License is required.  If your trip is conducted within a National Forest, a National Forest Permit is also required.  All licenses can be purchased online at www.gooutdoorsvirginia.com.

What do I need to bring and wear?

Blue Ridge Fishing Adventures strives to be an all inclusive experience.  We provide waders, boots, rods, reels, and all terminal tackle.  Your guide will also have sun screen, bug spray, first aid supplies, and hand warmers.  Breakfast, coffee or hot tea, sodas, gatorade, water, and snacks are always provided.  Lunch is provided on full-day trips.

All you need to bring are the fishing licenses listed above and seasonally appropriate clothing (your guide will help determine the best clothing to wear before your trip).  Polarized sunglasses, a rain jacket, and a change of clothes are recommended any time of year.

If you have any of your own gear, we encourage you practice with it.  A 9' 5 or 6 weight rod is ideal for most trips.  Brook trout trips usually require a 7-8' 2 or 3 weight.

Should I tip my guide?

As with all tipped professions, tipping is at the discretion of the client and your guide will appreciate any gratuity.  The industry standard is 20-25% of the trip cost.

If you have any questions not answered here please contact Blue Ridge Fishing Adventures and we'll try to answer them promptly.
