Jackson River Fly Fishing

The Jackson River is one of Virginia’s most respected trout fisheries, known for healthy wild brown and rainbow trout, cold and consistent tailwater flows, and long stretches of water that challenge and reward anglers. At Blue Ridge Fishing Adventures, we guide both float and wading trips on the Jackson, adjusting the approach based on water flow, access, and season. With a focus on clear instruction and thoughtful guidance, we help anglers step into this river with confidence.

If you want a trout river that feels scenic, technical, and full of opportunity, the Jackson is one you should experience.

What Makes the Jackson River Special

The Jackson is a four season trout fishery that stands out for both its scenery and its fish size. Trout in the Lower Jackson regularly reach beyond the twenty inch mark, and the river supports wild, naturally reproducing brown and rainbow trout. This lower section is a tailwater below Gathright Dam, known for cold, stable flows that create ideal year round habitat.

The Upper Jackson above Lake Moomaw flows through Hidden Valley and is a smaller freestone fishery stocked with rainbow and brown trout. It offers classic hike in water and a quiet mountain setting for anglers who enjoy exploring wilder terrain.

Throughout the river, varied structure creates consistent opportunities. Riffles, runs, deep pools, and fast channels all hold fish depending on the season. In spring and fall, big streamer fishing becomes a highlight as large brown trout feed aggressively before and after their spawning period. During major hatches, dry fly fishing can be excellent. Winter brings colder, slower flows that reward anglers who fish nymphs deep in the water column.

The Jackson is also a historically significant waterway. Its role in forming the James River and the surrounding mountain landscape gives anglers a strong sense of Virginia’s natural heritage as they fish.

Why Fish the Jackson River With Us

The Jackson can be a technical river, but with the right guidance, it becomes one of the most enjoyable places to learn and grow as a trout angler. Our goal is to simplify the challenges and bring you into productive water with clear instruction and patient teaching.

Instruction centered guiding

We break down casting, reading water, presentation, fly selection, and seasonal technique in a way that helps every angler improve.

Licensed in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests

We are legally licensed to operate inside the national forests that surround much of the Jackson River, giving you proper access to water many anglers overlook.

Knowledge of King’s Grant restricted sections

Two stretches of the Lower Jackson fall under historic King’s Grant property, which restricts public wading. Drift boats provide rare access to these waters, and we safely guide through these areas.

Beginner and experienced anglers welcome

Whether you are casting dries for rising trout in spring or stripping big streamers for trophy browns in fall, we match the day to your skill level.

Wading Trips on the Jackson River

Wading is best suited to the Upper Jackson above Lake Moomaw, especially through the Hidden Valley area. This section offers classic freestone terrain with stocked brook, rainbow and brown trout, easy access points, and technical pockets that help new anglers build strong fundamentals. It is a scenic, quiet place to learn and perfect for practicing dry fly, nymph, and light streamer presentations.

Float Trips on the Jackson River

Floating the Lower Jackson gives you access to one of the most impressive wild trout fisheries in Virginia. Clear water, deep bends, riffle corners, and oxygen rich currents hold fish year round. We use 6 and 7 weight rods when targeting larger browns with streamers and switch to lighter setups during hatches or summer surface activity.

Because of King’s Grant restrictions, drift boats provide one of the only ways to legally fish several long stretches of this famous tailwater.

A Day Focused on Learning

We start every trip by helping you understand the plan for the day, the current conditions, and the techniques that will give you the best chance at success. Whether we are drifting big streamers through deep pools, drifting nymphs in winter water, or casting dries during a hatch, your guide will keep the day supportive, clear, and focused on helping you improve.
